The American Civil War was not fought to end slavery but to preserve the Union

In this final discussion for the course, students are required to utilize any and all the materials that were assigned for this class in answering the question below.

“The American Civil War was not fought to end slavery but to preserve the Union.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement and why?

Guidelines

In your answer please consider the reasons why some states seceded from the Union. What attempts were made to avoid war or to keep the union together? You should examine the changing positions (or lack thereof) of the key leaders both in the Union and the Confederate States. Finally, Adam Goodheart’s piece, “How Slavery Really Ended in America”, should certainly be one of your sources. Ultimately, whatever position you take on this question, your answer must be backed up with specific historical evidence, dates and names. Your answer should be written in a minimum of four paragraphs and must carry a valid bibliography at the end. You should use and cite some primary sources in your answer. Your initial post should be an in-depth response that addresses all the questions and issues involved. After you make your initial posting, respond the posts of at least two of your classmates.
