Choose one artwork from either the Kamakura, Nanbokucho, or Muromachi periods

Choose one artwork from either the Kamakura, Nanbokucho, or Muromachi periods from the  Metropolitan Museum of Art that you think is influenced by Zen Buddhism.

Write a 1.5-2 page (double-spaced, one-inch margins, size 12 Times New Roman font) Formal Analysis on the artwork you choose.

Remember a Formal Analysis is an essay that closely examines the artwork. It includes...

  • the "tombstone" information about the artwork: Artist's Name. Title. Period. Date/Date Range. Medium. Location.
  • an account of the subject of the artwork
  • a description of the artwork using the Elements of Art and Principles of Design
  • an analysis of the effects of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design

Make sure your Formal Analysis EXPLICITLY states where you see the Zen influence in the artwork.

Make sure you include an image of the artwork you chose on a separate page. The image does not have to be in color.
