Contemporary Cultural Challenges

For this week’s assignment, you will research a contemporary issue facing your chosen tribe. You may wish to conduct some preliminary research before choosing a specific issue to address. Present your research by constructing a three-page paper that addresses the challenges they face with this contemporary issue, and how the past experiences of the tribe have shaped their current culture. In your essay, thoroughly address one of the contemporary issues below:

  1. Health
    Questions to consider:

    • What are the health issues facing the tribe?
    • How has the health of the tribe been impacted by economic, environmental, and social issues?
  2. Economic issues
    Questions to consider:

    • What is the current status of the economy of the tribe?
    • How has the tribe been impacted by legislation, environmental issues, etc.?
    • What is the state of employment in the tribe?
    • How is the tribe impacted by the educational opportunities available to the tribe?
  3. Sovereignty issues
    Questions to consider:

    • How has tribal sovereignty been impacted by legislation?
    • Are there any current legal battles over sovereignty? If so, what are they?
    • Does the tribe have its own judicial law enforcement? If so, what does that look like?
  4. Environmental issues
    Questions to consider:

    • What kind of environment does the tribe live in?
    • Is the tribe impacted by global warming or mining?

After addressing your chosen issue, discuss how the contemporary issue for this tribe compares and contrasts to another tribe of your choice (from either the textbook or the list of tribes).
