dualist

Please answer all four questions using the assigned reading materials and your own examples to illustrate. Your answer to each question should be one page in length (four pages total) typed, double spaced, 12 point font.

Answer all four:

1. Explain why a dualist might argue that, even if it fooled an outside observer into thinking that it was conscious, a computer would still lack the conscious awareness that a person has (use René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes (Paul Churchland), John Locke, and your own examples to illustrate).

Remember: The Cartesian soul is known through reason and reflection not faith. Do not talk about faith—that is a different issue.

2. Explain Gretchen Weirob’s argument concerning the “Blue River” in the First Night.

3. Explain David Hume’s skepticism concerning causality. Convince your reader that Hume’s analysis of cause and effect is sound.

4. Using your own examples to illustrate, convince your reader that Hobbes is correct—that desire and aversion do away with free will.
