Competency Description:

Effective leadership requires that individuals have a strong sense of self, and that they be able to critically

examine their own leadership and followership behaviors so that they can learn from experience and

integrate that experience with more formal knowledge in order to help them see ways to improve as a

leader and follower, and to see new possibilities for the future.

For this Work Product Assessment, you will have an opportunity to critically reflect upon professional and

personal leadership experiences, and examine them in light of both specific behavioral knowledge, such

as Goleman’s (2000) “Emotional Intelligence” framework, and in light of other relevant documented leader

and follower best practices and theoretical frameworks.

You will also have the opportunity to critically reflect upon experiences where you, or someone important

to you, experienced a time of great crisis, adversity, and stress, which led to profound insights about your

or their motivations and desires to lead and to improve as a leader (this is known as a “crucible of

leadership”).

This Assessment is comprised of three major parts:

 Part 1: Improving Leadership Practice Through Emotional Intelligence-Based Self-Assessment

 Part 2: Evaluating Leadership Behavior and Effectiveness in Action

 Part 3: Understanding the Impact of Leadership Crucibles in Shaping Leaders

Assessment Submission Length: Approximately 9-10 pages.
